Obituary for Birdie Jorene Harris

Birdie Jorene Harris, age 85, passed away on September 1, 2020 at her home in Athens. She was born on May 8, 1935 to Samuel Vernon and Gail Marie (Denney) McKenzie in LaRue.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Shorty Harris; son, Ricky Harris; sisters, Gail Paglearo, Evelyn Dingler; brother, Sam McKenzie.
Birdie worked for many years downtown at Steeles shoe store. She sold many pairs of shoes to the people of Athens. She later worked for Athens ISD in the school cafeteria until her retirement. Most importantly, Birdie loved and cared for her family. Raising three boys and keeping her home a haven of rest to come to. She loved to cook and enjoyed feeding her family, especially on Sunday at lunch. She never met a stranger. Loved people, and her community. She never missed her kids or grandkids baseball games, or anything they were participating in. Birdie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include, her sons, Danny Harris, Steve Harris and wife Katie; grandchildren, Wade and Cassie Hampton, Amber and Ryan Lewis, Rich Harris and Morgan Platter, Tyler Harris, Trent Harris, Megan Templin, Christy Templin, and Chris Harris; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Merle Clair; along with many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Henderson County Alzheimer’s Coalition P. O. Box 621 Athens, Texas 75751.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at LaRue Cemetery, with Bro. Olin Boles officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
