Obituary for Janice Kay Webster

Janice “Kay” Gilliland Webster (69), peacefully went to be in the arms of Jesus on September 13, 2020. She was surrounded by family in friends at her home in Athens, Texas. Kay was born on November 1, 1950, to her parents Arnold and Janice Gilliland, at Perrin Field Air Force Base in Sherman, Texas.
Kay grew up in Sherman, Texas. She was a graduate of Sherman High School class of 68’. While growing up on King Street in Sherman, she spent countless hours at the feet of her mother where she learned the art of sewing. She was a gifted seamstress. There was nothing that she could not create her own pattern for and duplicate. She found joy in sharing her talent of sewing throughout her life.
She met the love of her life Kenny Webster, in 1975 and spent many hours on the dance floor as they fell in love. They married in Ponder, Texas on September 19, 1975. Kenny and Kay raised their family in Ponder, Clarksville, Terrell, Martins Mill, and later built their “forever home” on Webster Ridge, in Athens, Texas. Kay loved her family BIG! She spent her life pouring herself into others. She was a mother to three, but “mothered” so many others. Sharing her love for Christ was her passion. She enjoyed reading books and listening to sermons, to build her knowledge and love for God. Her precious memories were time spent with her sweet husband and family. She treasured the opportunity to not only be a grandmother to Justin and Alexandria, but also be their “bonus” mom. She loved weekend trips with her husband, late night talks with family and friends, annual July trips to Destin with family, rocking her great grandbaby “Kaylee Bug”, hearing stories of grandson Andrew’s fishing and hunting success, and watching her Hallie Girl on the basketball court.
In the early 80’s, Kay was the Financial Secretary at First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Texas. After her daughter left for college, she decided to return to school and obtained an Associates Degree with high honors at Trinity Valley Community College. She then pursued a degree at the University of Texas in Tyler. In 2010, after serving over a decade as the General Manager of the Cain Center, Kay retired to spend time with her grandchildren.
Kay was preceded in death by her loving parents Arnold Woodrow and Janice Gilliland, and her beloved in-laws Loye and Margaret Webster of Ponder.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Kenny Webster; son, Skip Shelton; daughter, Polly and husband David Williams; son, Zach Webster; grandchildren, Justin Blayne Shelton, Alexandria Paige Shelton, Andrew David Williams, and Hallie Grace Williams; great-granddaughter Kaylee Grace Shelton, all of Athens; brother, Woody and wife Lee Ruth of Abilene; sister, Hallie Jean and husband Joel Ross of Keller; sister-in-law, Caroline Miller of Denton; brother-in-law Alan and wife Carol Ann Webster of Lake Worth; sister-in-law Peggy and husband Ken Curtis of Conifer, Colorado, and numerous nieces, and nephews.
A “Celebration of Life” service for Kay will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Faith Fellowship Church in Athens, Texas. Open visitation will begin at 10 am, followed by the service at 11 am.
Memorials honoring Kay may be made to Athens Soup Kitchen at 421 N. Prairieville St. Athens, Texas 75751 or to Samaritan’s Purse at www.samaritanspurse.org/our-ministry/memorial-giving/
