Obituary for Margaret Parks

Margaret Parks, 83, of Athens, Texas, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2019, in Dallas, Texas.

Margaret was born to the late Samuel and Thora Reese, on July 29, 1935 in Dierks, Arkansas. Margaret grew up in Dierks, and after graduating from high school, moved to Dallas. There she met and married Donald Stanford. Don and Margaret lived in DeSoto, Texas for 20 years, and had two daughters. Don passed away in 1977.

Margaret moved with her daughters to Irving and met Sunny Parks, whom she eventually married, and they then moved to Dallas. Sunny and Margaret were successful business owners, having started, grown, and sold three companies; Metro North American Van Lines, RSI Crating & Packaging, and LinkEx,Inc. After their retirement, the couple moved to Athens, Texas and were very active at the Eastern Hills church of Christ. Sunny passed away in 2012.

Margaret grew up in a Christian home. Her paternal grandfather, Jeff Reese, was a preacher in the church of Christ and traveled across the state of Arkansas preaching the gospel of Christ. Her grandfather had a profound effect on her spiritual growth and love for the Lord. Margaret’s parents fostered that love and she was baptized at age 15. Margaret proclaimed The Good News and her love for Christ until her last breath.

Margaret’s parents also taught her that only God was more important than family. Her father often said that “family will always be there, even when others won’t”, and Margaret took this to heart. Her family was her first priority. Her father also did not allow the word “can’t” to be used in their home. This “you can do anything” encouragement from her parents was a huge part of why she was so successful in later years. Margaret’s mother dedicated her life to caring for her husband and children. She was the epitome of selflessness and generosity. Her mother was the greatest influence on Margaret’s life and taught her, by example, how to love and care for others. A lesson Margaret learned and lived well.

Margaret was respected and beloved by employees, colleagues, friends, and family. She is survived by her two daughters, Gayla Stanford Plunkett, and husband Neil, of Heath, Texas and Tammy Stanford Ellis, of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeremy Henry, Sunny Trammell, Meredith Oliver, and Ryan Plunkett, and by her siblings: Ann Johnson, of Fulshear, Texas, Bobbie Horton, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Maizie Hester, of Rockwall, Texas. Margaret was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Sue Wilson, and her brothers, Sam Reese Jr. and Ray Reese.

Visitation will be held at the Eastern Hills church of Christ on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 1:30 pm, followed by a celebration of Margaret’s life at 2:30 pm, with Neil Plunkett and Eric Thornton officiating. Burial to follow at Athens City Cemetery.
